The 2008 Long Island Marathon, this weekend

This weekend is the 36th annual Long Island Marathon. The RexCorp Long Island “Festival of Races” will start on Saturday and conclude Sunday afternoon.

The marathon is always the first Sunday in May. Over 5,000 runners have signed up for the two day event. The Long Island Marathon, recognized as one of Long Island’s most prestigious sporting events, is celebrating its 36th anniversary.

THE RACES:

The all new 5K Race will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 8:00 AM in front of Museum Row in Garden City. Look-out for Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, who has signed up for this race.

The Oasis Camps’ Kidz FunRun will also take place on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 1:30PM on the track at the Mitchel Athletic Complex. Races are for various age groups and skill levels as well as activities for small children such as race-number coloring. Ronald McDonald and Sparky the Dragon will be on hand to start the races.

There is no charge or pre-registration for the Oasis Kidz Fun Run. All participants will recieve a finisher medal. The first 150 participants will receive a free toy from McDonalds, courtesy of the Long Island Association of McDonalds.

The Full Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K Races will take place on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 8:00 AM. Participants of all 3 races will start at the same time on Charles Lindbergh Blvd. and finish at the same location inside of Eisenhower Park.

The main and half marathon will start in the Hub, passing Museum Row, the Nassau Coliseum, RexCorp’s Omni Building, Nassau Community College and Mitchel Athletic Complex. The route will continue through the Village of Westbury to Jericho Turnpike, then go to Brush Hollow Road and Carman Avenue (Wantagh Parkway for full marathoners) before finishing in Eisenhower Park.

PLACES TO WATCH:

The Long Island Marathon has many sponsored “Cheering Stations” located throughout the marathon/ half marathon course. Each of these stops will feature easy access from main roads, entertainment and fun!

Official Cheering Stations will be at the following locations:
- Post Avenue and Maple Avenue
- Jericho Tpke at Vert Fitness
- Brush Hollow Road at the North Fork Theater
- Wantagh Parkway and Old Country Road
- Wantagh Parkway and Hempstead Tpke.
- Wantagh Parkway and Sunrise Highway
- Carmen Avenue by North Fork Bank

THE HEALTH AND FITNESS EXPO:

The expo will feature local and national vendors featuring the latest and greatest in running and athletic-related products and services. The expo is free and open to the public, so bring along your family members and friends. The expo is at the Mitchel Athletic complex.

* Friday, May 2, 2008 4PM - 9 PM
* Saturday, May 3, 2008 10AM - 6 PM
