Help “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive, tomorrow

The U.S. Postal Service National Association of Letter Carriers is asking everyone to help “Stamp Out Hunger” on Saturday, May 10.

Tomorrow, postal employees in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands will collect non-perishable food items and deliver them to local community food banks, pantries, and shelters across the country.

Customers are asked to place bags of non-perishable food items such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox before their letter carrier delivers the mail on Saturday, May 10. The letter carrier will do the rest, taking the food to the Post Office where it is sorted and delivered to an area food bank or pantry.

An estimated 35 million people are at risk of hunger in America, including 12 million children. Since 1993, the Postal Service and the NALC have partnered on this campaign to stamp out hunger. It has grown to become the world’s largest, single-day food drive, collecting more than three-quarters of a billion pounds of food since its inception.

NYS Senator “Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr.” (R-8th) and Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R-19th) recently visited the Merrick Post Office to donate food as part of the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.

“Right now, there are over 250,000 Long Islanders who are suffering from hunger. This extremely worthwhile cause will help replenish local food banks and pantries and provide assistance to our neighbors who have fallen on hard times,” said Senator Fuschillo.
