On Wednesday, June 4, people across the Island reported smelling an odd odor in the air.

The odor was first reported in early morning hours near the shores of Brooklyn and Queens, it then quickly moved into Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Concerned residents started to flood the phone lines of local fire departments and media outlets. Some fire departments sent out their vehicles to try and locate the source.

Yesterday morning, Wantagh News was in Bellmore, Merrick and Wantagh. In those three areas, a burning type odor was definitely in the air.

There are conflicting reports on the source of the odor. The FDNY and Nassau County Office of Emergency Managment sent out releases, stating the most likely source of the odor is from a large house fire in Jersey City, NJ. Other reports are that the source is from a fire in a crude distillation unit at Valero’s Delaware City, Delaware, refinery on Tuesday. In either case, the weather played a large role in keeping the smoke low to ground and able to travel far distances.

Jersey City is 30 miles away & Delaware City is 250 miles away from Wantagh.
