Zach’s Bay at Jones Beach State Park is set to open today after yesterday’s closure due to a Shark Sighting.

On Thursday morning, multiple witnesses said they saw a shark off Zach’s Bay Beach at Jones Beach in Wantagh. Park Officials decided to close the beach out of an abundance of caution. State Park Police and Lifeguards ordered all swimmers out of the water. About two dozen people were in the water at the time of the incident. A Nassau County Police helicopter and US Coast Guard boat responded to the sighting.

There have been no reported injuries.

Officials said the fish was believed to be a thresher shark, about 4 to 6 feet long. According to Wikipedia, Thresher sharks are fairly slender, with small dorsal fins and large, recurved pectoral fins. They are known to follow large schools of fish into shallow waters. Thresher sharks are one of the few shark species known to jump fully out of the water making turns like dolphins. They are solitary creatures which keep to themselves.
