Yesterday, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and US Navy Representives signed documents to transfer over 105 acres of land in Bethpage from the Federal to the County government. The ceremony took place at the new Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola. Nassau County received the land free of charge.
The 105 acres were once part of a large 600+ acre Grumman Aerospace Corporation manufacturing facility and airport. In the 1990’s, with the end of the Cold War and federal government cutting back on military spending, Grumman merged with Northrop and ceased all operations at the Bethpage plant. Today, much of that land has been developed into a business park ( Headquarters for Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Cablevision and Rainbow Media, also, Briarcliffe College, NCPD Aviation Unit, 1-800 Flowers and FedEx), various forms of housing and community park grounds.
Suozzi says most of the land will be sold to private developers which will have to submit their future plans to the County and Town of Oyster Bay. Both the County Executive and Town Supervisor hope to see the land turned into a mix of high class office space, high tech businesses, parkland and housing. In the long-term developing this land will add millions of tax revenue dollars to the county, town and school districts.
Town of Oyster BaySupervisor John Venditto stated, “This is a tremendous opportunity for our economy and lifestyle to keep some of these young people with us.” He went to say that development of some land can not occur until the Navy cleans up 9 contaminated acres.
